Meet Chester – a landfill survivor who is learning what it means to be loved, and our feature animal for June's 50/50. 

Having never known the touch of a human, Chester spent his entire life living in the confines of a landfill where he had to learn to survive. He was part of an unmanaged colony of cats that had come to call the landfill home. 

After an employee noticed the large number of cats roaming freely and struggling to survive in harsh conditions, they took action and began trapping the homeless cats. Chester was one of the adults rescued and, after being caught, found his way into our care at Bide Awhile. 

When he arrived, he was covered in mats and burs from his life outside – the knots in his fur were so severe that he needed to be shaved while sedated for his neuter surgery. 

Since his arrival in February, Chester has spent the last few months in a foster home where he is slowly learning to trust humans and accept the love we have to offer. While he still has some progress to make before he's ready for a home of his own, he continues to make strides every single day.  

Chester survived years without kindness. He learned that every day was a struggle and that the world wasn't a place that offered comfort. Now, when he hesitates before accepting a gentle touch or cautiously settles into a soft bed, we're witnessing something remarkable: a cat learning for the very first time that he doesn't have to be afraid anymore. After years of fighting for survival, Chester is finally being given the chance to simply be loved.
