Sunbeam Community & Developmental Services serves over 14,000 individuals and families annually. We proudly to serve many regions across Southwestern Ontario, including:
• Waterloo Region
• Wellington County
• Peel Region
• Halton Region
• Dufferin County
• York Region
• Simcoe County
Across Waterloo Region, Sunbeam provides specialized community living programs for people of all ages in congregate living settings who are living with a developmental disability, and who may also have complex medical or behavioural support needs.
Persons who live in one of Sunbeam’s 26 congregate living settings receive support with daily living activities and may also receive clinical supports from our dedicated nursing staff. Within these homes, their homes, the people we support have the opportunity to connect with peers, friends and families as they develop long lasting and meaningful relationships. Additionally, we strive to provide opportunities in which the individuals supported can engage with the larger community and take part in local activities and events.
For many of the people supported by Sunbeam, a hospital stay can be a very challenging time. A hospital visit is a stressful experience at the best of times. For an individual living with a developmental disability, and who may have other complex support needs, the challenges associated with a stay in hospital are even greater. Having a Sunbeam staff member at your side while in hospital, someone who knows you and understands your needs, can make such a positive difference in supporting your health and wellbeing at such a critical time.
Through the generosity of Sunbeam’s supporters and donors, our Hospital Stay Program enables specialized and highly skilled Sunbeam staff to be present at hospital to provide this invaluable support. Familiarity and trust; advocating on behalf of the individual’s best interests and providing comfort and support during a stressful hospital stay. Sunbeam staff understand the verbal and non-verbal cues of the persons we support and are well equipped to convey necessary medical information to hospital physicians and nurses who may not be experienced in providing care to individuals with such complex needs.
Over the past year, over 250 hospital visits have been supported by Sunbeam staff, through Sunbeam’s Hospital Stay Program. This is why we need your support!
