When Isabel’s femur suddenly broke shortly after birth, her family from Yorkton, Sask., knew something wasn’t right.
“We determined right away that this would be a journey with no end date,” said her mother, Marjorie.
Isabel spent a month in the neonatal intensive care unit while specialists worked to determine the cause of her broken bone and low muscle tone. Test results later confirmed she had spinal muscular atrophy.
When Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital (JPCH) opened in 2019, the family moved to Saskatoon to be closer to the specialized care Isabel requires.
Isabel is a regular patient at JPCH. She has been treated for low bone density, admitted for breathing difficulties related to a common cold and monitored for lung aspiration. She is followed by the feeding tube team for her G-tube, has undergone numerous X-rays and receives physiotherapy, speech and occupational therapy, along with support from a social worker.
“Our experience at JPCH has been incredible. I could not imagine the stays and treatments in a hospital that is not geared towards kids. It has made all the difference in our stays and visits there,” said Marjorie.
Now 12, Isabel loves McDonald’s french fries, playing with toy trucks and her iPad, listening to music and spending time at the spray park in the summertime.
